Emergency Preparedness

Sirens

Emergency sirens are used to alert the citizens of Douglas of emergencies. Between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. the sirens will be sounded for any emergency requiring the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department to respond. These emergencies include traffic crashes, structure fires, and wild-land fires, to mention a few.

The emergency sirens are also tested monthly. The first Saturday of each month, the sirens are sounded for a steady three minute blast. These are tests of the Civil Defense Outdoor Warning sirens. In the event of severe weather, local or national disasters, the Douglas Police Department will interrupt cable television programming to inform you of any emergency situation.

Whenever the Civil Defense Outdoor Warning sirens are activated and sound a steady three minute blast, you should tune to the cable television system or to KKTY a.m. radio (1470) for up-to-date emergency information.

Emergency Shelters

In case of emergency, there are several buildings that are designated as emergency shelters where citizens can seek refuge.

Tornadoes

Tornadoes are less common in Wyoming than in other Midwest and Plains states, however, they do occur and citizens should be prepared in case they find themselves in the path of a tornado.

Lightning

Lightning is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable hazards of thunderstorms.

Winter Storms

Winter storms are a very real and common danger for citizens and visitors to Douglas. Be prepared for a winter emergency and be aware of some of the dangers that may not be so obvious.
